Extermination Account (Start reading under the heading "Extermination")
2. On a scale of 1-10, 1 being "strongly disagree" and 10 being "strongly agree," evaluate the following statement: Early Spanish involvement in the New World was a good thing. Write or type out five sentences that justify your response. Once you show Mr. Shoop your five sentences, go on to step 3.
3. After you have written your response, access Voki through the following link: Voki.com. Copy and paste your response into the avatar of your choice and post the link to your finished avatar in your comment. Your comment will contain your five sentences and a link to your avatar. Remember the guidelines for this blog -- keep it appropriate and education-oriented.
4. You will have a quiz on Monday. It will cover 1) Christopher Columbus’s journal and the vocabulary words (disposition, prostrate, ingenious, disposed) we learned 2) your opinion on whether Columbus's exploration should be celebrated today, and 3) the Colombian exchange (textbook pages 25-26) -- know what the Colombian Exchange was and three products from each “side” of the exchange.
1-We strongly disagree because the Spaniards involvement with the Tainos eventually exterminated the Indians. The Spaniards got more out of this situation then the Tainos did. When the Spaniards came to the Tainos' island they ruined the peace between the Indians. When the Spaniards came they were acting nice and had good intentions but that all came out wrong and the result was the death of all the Tainos. Since the Spaniards became greedy with power, they then started to sell the Indians off for money and that is why we strongly disagree that the Spaniards were a good thing for the Tainos Indians.

We give the statement a seven.Columbus was thought of as a good thing and a bad thing. He was a good thing because he discovered new resources. He was a bad thing because people thought he was a slavetrader and a thief. Overall, we think Columbus had more of a positive impact then negative on the native people.

4--I think the Spanish involvement in the New World caused more harm than good. Columbus and his men first started with a friendly relationship with the natives, but later their relationship worsened. When Columbus returned the second time, he found that the natives had killed the men he left behind. Instead of resolving the problem gently, Columbus slaughtered many more natives and escalated the situation. Also, pressure from Spain caused Columbus to begin trading slaves, which made his impact on the New World even harsher.

5 There was a lot of diseases that were spread from the Spanish to the natives. The natives were brought back to spain as slaves. Columbus stole the land from the natives and forced them to move. The Spanish took the land the natives had and they all moved away in fear. One good thing that happened is that christianity was spread to the natives.

ReplyDelete5~~~ It was profitable for the Spanish, but not for the Indians. Columbus's attacks seemed to be the act of protecting a friend. Becoming exposed to diseases increased the Indian's immune system's strength. However, it was wrong to invade and kill. The true motives of Columbus will always be a mystery.

ReplyDeleteI think that the involvement of the Spanish in the New World was a terrible thing for the natives. This involvement resulted in their persecution, enslavement, and deaths. The treatment of the natives was unacceptable. While they did attack on occasions, the Spaniards were trespassers in their land. However, the successes Columbus did achieve opened the door for the development of the New World and so indirectly allowed for the establishment of the colonies by the British. Also, Columbus tried to be fair and kind in his relations with the natives. His men and his own ignorance ultimately lead to disaster for Spaniard-native relations.

ReplyDeletewe think it would be a 7. if it wasnt there we wouldnt be here because christpher columbus was like the only englishman that would come here. they also opened the doors to knew things like cultures and stuff like that. they also established trade to routes. one downfall is that they killed alot of people. ReplyDeleteAccording to the extermination account, we scale it at an 8. From the links that we saw, we know that Columbus take over the lands and recourses, to benefit himself. Tainos don’t have any weapons; they can’t defend themselves. As a result, in just 43 years an entire culture had been eliminated. They don’t worship any God before, but now they know more about Christianity. The natives forced the men, women, and children into slavery, so the population decreased right away.

I think that on a scale of 1 to 10 early Spanish involvement in the New World would be a 5. It was good because if they wouldn’t have discovered America, we wouldn’t be here. The Spanish also brought Christianity to the people on the island. It was bad because Columbus made all of the people slaves and brought diseases to the people. Eventually all of the people died either from disease or Columbus’ men killing them.
On a scale of 1-10 I'd say the Spanish involvement in the new world was a 4. When the Spanish arrived things started out pretty good. Columbus and his crew were able to befriend the Taino indians, and they gave them gifts in hope that they would stay friendly and become Christian. The Taino also helped Columbus build a fort on Hispanola called Navidad. But unfortunately they ran into trouble when the Taino were angry with the 40 Spaniards conduct in the fort so they killed them. After that they fought against each other and alot of people died.
