Wall Street Protests: Who Are the 99%?

We have mentioned the Wall Street protests a few times in class recently. For today, we will find out what it is all about. In order to do this, complete the three tasks that follow.
1) Read the New York Times newspaper's overview of the Occupy Wall Street protests found here.
2) Using that information, complete the background questions handed out to you in class.
3) After this is finished, post a comment on this blog by writing a 5-7 sentence paragraph answering the following question: would you think about joining one of these protests?
Check out these two websites to help you decide:
http://wearethe99percent.tumblr.com/ (says that the protests are a good thing)
http://the53.tumblr.com/  (says that the protests are not a good thing)

  1. I find it unlikely I would join a protest such as the aforementioned. I enjoy a comfortable life too much and do not want to go through the inconvenience a real stakeout brings. I realize that is selfish and pathetic, but I'm not very motivated to change that thinking. That could well change later in life when I find a cause I strongly identify with and when desire to voice my opinion. For now, I am content to let others do it for me.
Also, even if I agree with the general motivations for a demonstration(such as the 99%), I will not agree nor like all of those protesting beside me. I do not want to be associated with the idiots that are bound to congregate whenever "something" is happening. I want my personal opinion to stand alone and intact, not with the moronic ramblings of a neighbor taking over the rhetoric.

  2. I would not consider joining one of these protests. I don't feel strong enough about this topic to do something. I feel that these people are just complaining and not doing anything about the matter. I think it would be a bad thing. I think protesting is a little violent too.

  3. I would not join this protests because these problems that they are protesting for do no happen to me so what is the point of protesting? I think this protest wont affect much since all they are doing is complaining on the street without actually doing something to make the difference. They did gain attention through the news and television but it is not worth spending weeks living on the street protesting some thing what will hardly be changed. This is a waste of time, you can probably work and earn some money rather than doing this.

  4. I would think about it, but overall come to the decision that it's pointless. Even if we sit around for a month protesting these events, who says it will be worth it? Besides, the goverment is doing what they think is best, so they won't listen to our opinions. And everyone complaining in these protests don't realize that they aren't the only ones. They are protesting about their problems while half the world shares the same ones. If they would have spent the precious protesting time working, they may have earned enough to pay for food, water, rent, etc. School loans aren't going to change either. I suggest everyone suck it up and deal since it's not going to change. They're acting like children who got a cookie taken away from them. The government may have taken it, but you are making it easier to lose.

  5. I would most likely not join the protests because the problems are not really relevant to me right now. The people are mentally challenged for protesting about not having money instead of trying to get a job. They have no right to blame the rich people for accomplishing things in life. They dont have money because of the things they did or choices they made. I dont see how protesting will help.

  6. I would not join one of these protests. While their are people who have very difficult lives and others who live comfortably, some have earned those lifestyles by their actions or lack their of. My biggest thing against this protest is that while these people who are complaining about not getting enough money, they aren't working. They think that protesting is the way to actively take a stand but they are hurting themselves even more. By working hard i think they would find that that would be more effective than standing in a park and marching around.

  7. No I would never think about joining either side because its stupid. You have what you have because you have either worked for it or you haven't. Now if you haven't worked for anything then that is your fault and you should get out there and try harder. Yes college costs a lot but that is because teachers get paid too. Now take that expensive education and put it to work. On the other hand if you have gotten a good education and put it to good use, Good for you.

  8. I would not join one of these protests for many reasons. First of all, if you want change to come about, whining about it won't do you any good. There are many more effective ways to bring about a large change than sitting in a park all day long. Second, I do not support their cause. The protestors want the wealth to be "fairly" distributed. Their idea of "fair" is not the way the founders of America intended it to be. They wanted America to be a place with fair/equal opportunity, not equal wealth. If the wealth was forced to be equally spread out, then what would be the point of working hard?? Unequal wealth is what drives people to work hard and become successful.

  9. I would never join a protest like this. I understand that there are a lot of people that are struggling to support themselves and
their families but to blame someone else for the reason why you are not were you want to be is crazy.

  10. I do not think that I would ever join a protest such as this. Yes I agree that it is ridiculous that there are a few people that hold the majority of the wealth but camping out and yelling about it is going to do nothing to change that. These people did work for their wealth, some of them even had to go through just as much hardship as you. Work hard and earn your money, camping out with hipsters does nothing positive for you.

  11. I would not think about joining the protests. As you can see, the protestors are just sitting there, doing nothing but complaining about their own lifes. And also, I think that they have no rights to criticize the rich people, because it is their own faults to be the 99 percent. The rich people work hard and get their success. In addition, the government would not listen to the protestors. So I wouldn't want to waste my time on this pointless protest.

  12. I would not join the protests. Those protesetors are yelling alond and doing some crazy things for getting more rights; and they think it's unfair for them because rich people are holding 99% money. However, The rich people earn their money by hard working but not yelling.

  13. I would not want to join these protests. They seem like a waste of time right now because they are not accomplishing anything. And while these protestors are sitting around and protesting all day the 1% of rich people are out their working hard and earning their money. It might not be fair to the 99% that the 1% has 99% of the money but the least they could do is show up to work and earn their money.

  14. I would not join these protests, because I think they are pointless and poorly motivated. I think the people who have the mind and the hard work should deserve much more than regular people. Their investments and control of money circulation is what run this entire system. Also, I am not sure if protesting will get the government to tax the rich.

  15. I would not join those protests, because they don't lead to nothing. They are saying that the rich is guilty for their wealth, but they don't think if they had to work to conquer that position and a good job.

  16. I don't think I would join this protest because it isn't affecting me. Yes, I think it's really sad that these people are struggling but it isn't fair that they are blaming the rich for their problems. Instead of blaming the rich they could actually try doing something, like getting a job to help solve their problem of not having enough money to support themselves and their family.
